Cycling shoes are usually made to accompany clipless pedals on a road or mountain bike. However, the term "clipless" is a misnomer. Clipless pedals do indeed have clips in them; they got their confusing name when they were first invented in the 19th century. Clipless pedals let you wear specialized shoes that clip to the pedals and feature a metal platform near the balls of your feet. They help spread out the stress and workload across your foot, rather than concentrating it in one area and increasing your odds of injury.

Step 1

Lace up your cycling shoes like you would normal shoes. Or, if your shoes are fastened with Velcro straps, use the straps to form a snug fit around your foot.

Step 2

Straddle your bike's frame, with one foot on a pedal and the other foot stabilizing you on the ground. Align the clip on one of your shoes with the clip on one of the pedals so you can insert it easily.

Step 3

Push down on the pedal to put your bike in motion and insert the shoe's clip into the pedal. Continue pedaling with this foot. Pick your other foot off the ground as the bike begins moving.

Step 4

Place your second foot on the other pedal and push the clip into its holder. Do this step at a slow speed until you get the hang of it. You also can continue pedaling slowly and take your time inserting the clip. You won't be in danger or falling unless you stop pedaling.

Step 5

Remove your shoes from clipless pedals by twisting each foot. Swing your ankle out away from the bike until you hear a popping sound. Remove the shoe from the pedal and set it on the ground when you are coming to a stop.

Tips and Warnings

  • Because you are clipped into your pedals, your feet and legs will be working harder to pull the pedals upward. Don't be surprised if new biking shoes make you sore. You will get used to them quickly.
