Hundreds of different oils are available; reading books on the subject will help you better understand the properties and effects of individual essential oils.

"The Directory of Essential Oils"

Wanda Sellar, author of the 2001 book "The Directory of Essential Oils," says the book gives the student or aromatherapist the critical information on 83 basic essential oils. The oils are categorized by aromas, chemical makeup and effects on the mind and body. This illustrated book contains information about the various blends of oils, as well as the effects of the oils on different skin types.

"The Aromatherapy Bible"

The contents of "The Aromatherapy Bible" by Gill Farrer-Halls are divided into uses for aromatherapy and descriptions of different essential oils. The book's introduction describes the history of essential oils and the ways in which oils are used in modern times. Instructions for how to use essential oils during meditation and message are included, as are recipes for a variety of creams and lotions. Farrer-Halls also discusses uses of oils for first aid, during pregnancy and with children. This 400-page book covers 75 basic and exotic blends of essential oils.

"Essential Aromatherapy"

This 208-page pocket guide by Susan and Valerie Worwood gives a complete A to Z description of essential oils. The authors discuss how oils are extracted from plants, how they work and how they are used. The guide also incorporates descriptions of various application methods, including face masks, foot tonics and shampoos, and outlines precautions regarding skin sensitivity, fire precautions and oils that should not be used. The essential oil profiles include information about countries of origin, extraction methods, interesting facts and contradictions. The topic of "good health" is also discussed, with information about diet and herbal teas, positive thinking and self-massage.
