Putting your fishing line on your reel is one of the first steps when preparing for fishing. It is certainly the first thing you do when you've bought a new rod and reel. Putting line on a reel needn't be a difficult task; in fact, by following a few simple steps, you should be able to do it quite simply. With practice and patience, putting fishing line properly on your reel will become second nature.

Step 1

Tie a knot about an inch from the end of your new fishing line.

Step 2

Use scissors or a wire cutter to cut the excess line off, almost right up to the knot. You should now have a fishing line with a knot at the end.

Step 3

Make a one- or two-inch-diameter loop with the end of your line, and pull the line beneath it through the loop, forming something akin to a noose.

Step 4

Open the noose so that it is wide enough to slip over your reel.

Step 5

Slip the noose over the reel.

Step 6

Pull the line tight. The knot that you tied in Step 1 should act as a stopper for the line, so you'll be able to pull the noose tight until it hits the knot. You're now ready to spool.

Step 7

Twist the spool to wrap the line around it. Try to leave a little space, about 1/16 of an inch, on both sides of the spool line-free.
