Stomachaches can be caused by a number of things, including medications, foods and infectious agents. The National Institutes of Health says nearly everyone experiences a stomachache at some point. Digestion-related stomach discomfort is common.
Bacterial Infection
KidsHealth.org, a medical resource supplied by the Nemours Foundation, says bacterial infections of the stomach are often called food poisoning. Food is not the only reason for a stomachache. Other causes include bacterial illnesses such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection, strep throat or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics.
Viral Infection
Like bacterial infections, a viral infection can be passed from person to person. Proper hygiene and food handling can limit the spread of either form of infection. Viral infection of the intestine can cause what's known as the stomach flu. In addition to the stomach discomfort, the virus is likely to cause other symptoms such as vomiting and/or diarrhea.
Digestive Causes
Indigestion (heartburn) can cause stomachaches, as well as a burning sensation in the chest. When the bowels become inflamed or slowed (constipation),abdominal discomfort may result. KidsHealth.org says some health conditions, such as those consisting of inflammation of the digestive tract, create stomachaches. Examples include irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease.
