B12, also known as cyanocobalamin, is one of the B vitamins. It can be delivered in a variety of ways, including through intramuscular injection. Injections of B12 can help in certain types of anemia, severe vitamin B12 deficiency, fatigue and in a familial disorder in which B12 is poorly absorbed, called Imerslund-Grasbeck disease. The procedure to inject B12 is relatively easy and can be performed at home, if necessary. It is important to follow good sterile and medical procedures to administer the injection safely and reduce the risk of infection or injury.

Step 1

Ensure that all materials, including the syringe, the B12 vial and cleaning materials are available and ready for use. Check the B12 vial to ensure it is the proper medication and that it has not expired. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Step 2

Prepare the syringe by opening the needle package and the syringe package. Insert the tip of the syringe into the end of the needle and twist the needle into place.

Step 3

Remove the needle cover and draw the plunger out to the amount of the total dose to be administered, filling the syringe with air.

Step 4

Wipe the rubber stopper in the B12 vial with an alcohol pad. Allow the alcohol to dry. Insert the needle through the rubber stopper. Turn the vial so the stopper is facing downward. Inject the air in the syringe into the vial. Draw the liquid B12 into the syringe.

Step 5

Remove the syringe from the vial. Hold the syringe with the needle upward. Lightly tap the syringe to allow any bubbles to rise to the tip of the syringe. Press the plunger to expel any air. Replace the needle cover.

Step 6

Select an injection site in an area that has a large muscle, such as the thigh. Cleanse the area with an alcohol pad and remove the needle cover.

Step 7

Flatten the skin against the muscle with the thumb and forefinger. Hold the syringe as you would a pencil with the point down. With a quick, deliberate movement, plunge the needle deeply into the injection site, through the skin and into the muscle. Continue to hold the syringe.

Step 8

Draw the plunger back. If blood returns into the syringe, do not continue with the injection. Remove the needle and try another injection site. If no blood returns, slowly press the plunger down to inject the B12.

Step 9

Remove the needle quickly, once finished. If the site bleeds, apply a bandage. Immediately replace the cover on the needle. Place the needle and syringe into a puncture-proof container and dispose of it at a service for biological waste disposal in your area.
