Every person experiences stress differently. For instance, someone might become stressed when he has to give a presentation at work in front of his coworkers; another person may enjoy public speaking and not experience stress. When a person faces an overwhelming amount of stress and does not know how to cope with it in a healthy way, she can develop mental health issues such as generalized anxiety disorder or depression.

Daily Hassles

Many people become stressed over the course a day when they experience daily life hassles, such as losing your keys, watching your child throwing a temper tantrum in the grocery store and having to make dinner for your husband and kids. People usually learn how to handle these daily life hassles and have ways to cope with them, such as taking deep breaths, exercising or taking a long bubble bath at the end of the day. Daily hassles might seem inconsequential on some days and overwhelming on others, especially if you experience multiple daily hassles in one day.

Major Life Events

Happy, sad, scary and frustrating major life events cause stress. Some people don't realize how affected they can be by happy events such as getting married or having a baby. Major life events cause extreme amounts of stress for the people involved. One of the most stressful events a person can experience is the loss of a spouse or child.

Internal Stressors

You often might think about external triggers of stress. Some people discount internal stressors; however, they can be just as debilitating as other types of stress. Internal stressors occur due to your personality, ability to cope with life events and a belief that you can handle a situation. Low self-esteem and people-pleasing attitudes can contribute to internal stressors.

Family Stressors

No one has the perfect family, and a person's family is a common cause of stress. Someone might become stressed because he gets into an argument with his teenage son, discovers that his wife has been cheating on him or finds out that one of his parents is sick.

Social Stressors

Social stressors are long-term problems that can't be fixed easily and affect people on a regular basis. Poverty, fear of crime and problems with the neighbors are examples of social stressors. Someone who experiences such social stressors may feel a lack of control of her life, which also contributes to internal stressors.

Physical Stressors

Stress can occur because someone hasn't gotten enough sleep, eats an unhealthy diet and doesn't exercise. Poor daily habits such as these can add to overwhelming stress and mental health issues. People who misuse drugs or alcohol also put themselves at risk for experiencing different types of stress, such as financial stress and family stress.
