Flomax is the brand name of the generic tamsulosin, a medication used in the treatment of BPH, benign prostate hyperplasia, or an enlargement of the prostate gland in men. Flomax lessens the tightness of the prostate muscles and your bladder. This helps to regulate your urination, which may be changed by an enlarged prostate to make you urinate more frequently or weakly. Flomax is administered as a capsule.
Flu-Like Side Effects
Flomax has been reported to induce common serious side effects that resemble the flu. For example, you may develop a cough while taking it or you may find you have a hoarse throat. There also is the relatively common potential for chills and a fever. Get medical aid if you develop any of these side effects. Other common flu-like side effects include nasal congestion, diarrhea, throat dryness, a runny nose, sneezing and swallowing difficulties. These, the Mayo Clinic states, are classified as not serious and should recede as you use the medication for a while.
Sexual
Although they are classified as non-serious, sexual side effects can be frustrating, especially if they continue. These types of side effects should be temporary at the beginning of treatment with Flomax, but call your physician if they persist. The most common of these is an ejaculation that is abnormal. Less common are less interest in sex, a lowered libido and a decrease in your ability to perform sexually. You also may experience temporary impotence.
Other Side Effects
Flomax also may cause some other side effects when you take it. The most common of the serious side effects are urination that is difficult or painful. Less common is pain in the chest. Seek medical help for these. More common temporary effects include pain in your back or other places throughout your body, vocal changes, headaches, abnormal weakness, a decrease in strength or lack of it and glandular swelling in your neck. Less commonly you may experience drowsiness, nausea or insomnia.
