If a loved one is struggling with her weight, then you should support and motivate her as she attempts to drop the excess pounds. Weight can be a sensitive topic for any person. If you discuss the topic in the wrong way, you can hurt feelings. Stay positive to motivate someone to lose weight--and avoid nagging. Focus on how well the person is doing instead of emphasizing episodes of bad eating.
Step 1
Point out the health benefits of weight loss. Instead of talking about improved appearance, let the person know that losing weight can keep your body healthy with a reduced risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Practice what you preach. Eating a healthy diet together can motivate a person to make wiser food choices. Eat nutritious, low-fat meals together and work out together. You can set up a standing date to take a brisk walk each evening.
Step 3
Give the person an incentive to lose weight. If the individual knows there is a reward for his weight loss, he may feel more motivated to stick to the diet and exercise plan. Some reward examples include dinner at his favorite restaurant, a weekend getaway or a new gadget he wants.
Step 4
Encourage the person to get back on track after slip-ups. Hurdles can be in the form of missed exercise sessions or food indulgences high in fat and calories. Point out how far she has come and that she should stick with her diet. Give her compliments, such as noting how well her clothes have been fitting.
Step 5
Be understanding. Let the person know that you understand how difficult losing weight can be and that you are there for him. Allow the person to come to you to discuss any problems he is having. You should not make him feel as if you are monitoring his food and exercise routine like a warden.
