Cluster headaches are headaches on one side of the head, starting as a series of pain that attacks in cycles, or clusters. The frequent, consistent occurrence of cluster headaches are called cluster periods. Cluster periods can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. The general occurrence of cluster headaches is rare but those who suffer from them generally only experience them one to two times per year. There is no cure for cluster headaches but treatment can shorten the attacks and lessen the severity of the pain.

Step 1

Get adequate sleep each night. Treatment of cluster headache sufferers has shown that lack of sleep or an interruption in an existing sleep pattern can bring on a series of cluster headaches. Develop a sleep schedule and stick to it each night, even when experiencing cluster headaches.

Step 2

Create a neutral environment free of strong odors or chemicals. Similar to migraines, strong odors can bring on or exacerbate the pain of cluster headaches. Substances such as paint, paint thinner, gasoline or other solvents are particularly effective in causing the headaches.

Step 3

Avoid alcohol (including beer and wine) and tobacco. It is generally a good idea to avoid them in general, but definitely while you are experiencing a series of cluster headaches. Alcohol particularly alters the body's ability to recognize and target the source of pain. Additionally, alcohol and tobacco can interfere with the effectiveness of medications for cluster headaches if your doctor has prescribed them.

Step 4

Be careful when you are in high altitudes, particular when flying. As the altitude increases, the oxygen available to you decreases; this is why cabin pressure is regulated on airplanes. A decrease in oxygen can cause cluster headaches. Take slow, steady breaths consistently and try not to spend an extended amount of time in higher altitudes when possible.

Step 5

Avoid consuming nitrates, as they have been found to cause cluster headaches or related symptoms. Nitrates can be found in smoked or processed meats as well as some medications, such as nitroglycerin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Perform muscle relaxation exercises to remain calm and channel the pain from cluster headaches. Try this simple exercise. Sit in a neutral position, feet on the floor, one hand on each knee, breathing slowly and deeply. Slowly start to clench your fists for 10 to 15 seconds. Hold the clench for an additional 5 seconds. Continue to breathe, do not hold your breath. Release and repeat.
