Softball pitchers rely on speed, accuracy and consistency to be effective. It also takes mental focus to be a good softball pitcher, along with the ability to stick with your technique even on days batters are hitting all of your best pitches.
Mental Game
Stay in the game mentally as you pitch. Visualize the pitch's path before you throw it. Put pressure out of your mind and just focus on your target. Don't allow yourself to get angry or upset, which can destroy your focus. Stay relaxed physically and mentally, and remember that you are in control. Remember that nothing can happen until you release your pitch, recommends Beth Keylon-Randolph's Fastpitch Softball Academy.
Start and Finish
Work on your windup and your finish. Focus on your speed as you drive off the pitching rubber. This lays the groundwork for a fast pitch. Many pitchers are told to focus on the length of their stride, but speed is just as important, advises pitchsoftball.com. Feel like you have a spring in your push-off leg, so that when you transfer your weight and lean into the pitch, you can drive fast off the rubber. It's also important to finish tall and to have good push-back resistance. To do this you need to "set up a wall." Use your stride leg as the resistance during the final downswing into the pitch's release. When you reach the release point, make sure your landing leg is straight and at a 15-to-25 degree angle, your upper body is erect and behind your front foot, your shoulders are 3/4 closed or less and that your hips are at most halfway closed.
Make Corrections
When you need to improve, focus on making one correction at a time, advises Cheri Kempf in her book, "The Softball Pitching Edge." This makes immediate success much more likely. Also note any parts of your delivery you are performing correctly or that are improving, even slightly. This will help you stay encouraged. It also keeps your flaws from becoming overwhelming. Strive for the ability to self-correct.
