Removing a bicycle's pedals can be tricky--but, sometimes, quite necessary. Whether you need to box your bike up for a move, replace your pedals or simply perform a little maintenance, knowing how to do it yourself may save you time and money. By following a few steps, you should be able to perform bike pedal removal without much difficulty.
Step 1
Shift your bicycle's gears so that your chain is on the largest chain ring. If your bicycle doesn't have multiple chain rings, this is unnecessary.
Step 2
Place a wood block underneath the pedal you will be starting with. This will give you extra leverage.
Step 3
Locate the flat area on the pedal's axle, typically next to the crank arm. If your pedal does not have a flat area on the axle, locate the hole at the end of the pedal's axle.
Step 4
Position the wrench so that it is gripping the pedal around the flat area (the longer the wrench, the better). If your pedal's axle has no flat area, attach an Allen key to the hole at the end of the pedal's axle.
Step 5
Turn the wrench. Generally, this means turning it in the direction of the back of the bicycle (this goes for both pedals). You may find that the pedals are putting up quite a fight; in that case, spray a little WD-40 on the area and allow some time for it to soak in. Turning the wrench now should be considerably easier.
Step 6
Continue turning the wrench (or the Allen key) until the pedal detaches from the bicycle.
