Citalopram is the generic form of the drug Celexa. Celexa is a drug that is prescribed to treat depression and sometimes anxiety disorders that accompany depression. This medication is available only under the supervision and with a prescription from a physician. Take this medication exactly as prescribed and do not stop taking the drug without your doctor's approval. There are a few common side effects associated with this medication that usually resolve within one to two weeks of starting your new regime.
Nausea and Vomiting
Nausea and vomiting are common side effects of Celexa. These symptoms usually resolve within one week. You can reduce or alleviate nausea and vomiting by taking Celexa with a meal or a full glass of milk to coat the lining of the stomach and reduce irritation. Avoid laying down for an hour after taking Celexa to prevent or reduce nausea.
Anxiety
Many people will experience anxiety when first starting to take Celexa. Celexa works by altering chemicals in the brain such as serotonin to reduce depression. While these chemicals are being changed in the brain, anxiety may result. It may manifest as a low level of constant anxiety or random panic attacks. Your physician can prescribe medications to eliminate anxiety until your body adjusts to the Celexa.
Drowsiness
Drowsiness is a symptom from the altering of brain chemicals that many people experience for the first few weeks of taking Celexa. Some people always have slight drowsiness after taking their daily dosage of the drug and may find themselves sleeping more often. If you find this symptom overwhelming, your physician may decide to try a different antidepressant drug.
Weight Changes
Weight gain is the most common weight change that users of Celexa experience. This is usually due to increased sleeping and the slowing of the metabolism, which is caused by the drug as part of the action to alleviate depression. Very few people may experience weight loss, but it is usually only a few pounds.
Decreased Libido
A common and troublesome side effect of Celexa and most antidepressant drugs is a decreased libido. You may find that you have little or no desire for sexual activity. Additionally, you may find that you are unable to become aroused or achieve orgasm. This is a symptom that can be discussed with your physician if it is extremely troublesome or long-lasting.
