Softball is one of the most popular sports played in the United States. It is played at the competitive level by high school, college and professional athletes. It is also played at the recreational level by athletes who play the game well into their sixties. Softball has been a boon to female athletes, many of whom have a chance to earn college scholarships by excelling at the high school level.

Field of Play

The softball field is smaller than a baseball field. The diamond-shaped infield has bases that are 60 feet apart. The pitching rubber is 43 feet from the tip of home plate. Outfield fences are not required in softball, but it is recommended that they should be at least 175 feet from home plate.

Number of Players

Softball teams can compete with nine players. However, the standard is that 10 players can be used in the field and 10 players can come up to bat. The extra fielder is almost always a fourth outfielder, but the coach may also choose to put the extra fielder in the infield. There is a designated hitter that bats for one of the fielders. While baseball requires the designated hitter to bat for the pitcher, the designated hitter can bat for any fielder in softball.

Protective Equipment

Softball players are required to wear helmets when they are in the on-deck circle, at bat and when they are on the bases. Protective face masks are encouraged but not required. Catchers must wear masks, chest protectors and shin guards. All players must wear cleated shoes.
