Baseball bats are available in a variety of brands, lengths and weights to fit different age groups and hitting styles. Bat size is important for control, bat speed and overall hitting success. A bat that is too heavy or too long can cause poor mechanics and a slow bat, and a bat that is too light will not provide maximum power. Choosing a bat that is too short will not provide adequate plate coverage in the batter's box. There are several factors to consider when looking for the right size baseball bat.

Step 1

Review the league rules regarding weight and length restrictions for bats. Some leagues restrict the maximum barrel size, bat length and weight-to-length ratio. For example, a bat measuring 33 inches and weighing 30 oz. has a weight-to-length ratio of -3. Youth organizations typically allow -7 and -10, while high school and college leagues require no more than -3.

Step 2

Select a bat based on body size. Find a bat that has a length slightly shorter than the hip. For example, most 8- to 9-year-olds start with a bat measuring 26 to 28 inches and weighing 16 to 20 oz. As a general rule, bigger power hitters will choose a heavy bat and smaller players will choose a lighter bat to produce a quicker swing.

Step 3

Grip the bottom part of the handle around the knob with the dominant hand. Hold the bat straight out until your arm is perpendicular with your torso, and the bat and arm are both horizontal. Keep the bat steady for 20 seconds. If the bat or arm starts to shake before the 20 seconds are up, the bat is too heavy. Repeat the test with a lighter bat.

Tips and Warnings
