Cetirizine hydrochloride is an antihistamine used to treat allergy symptoms and hay fever. This drug was previously available by prescription only as Zyrtec, but is now available over the counter. There are also some forms available as cetirizine dihydrochloride but they are seldom used and are essentially the same as cetirizine hydrochloride. There are some potential side effects that you may experience while using this medication. You should consult your physician or pharmacist before starting cetirizine hydrochloride to check for any contraindications for use or drug interactions.
Drowsiness
Drowsiness is the most common side effect of cetirizine hydrochloride. If you are taking this drug for a prolonged period of time, this symptom usually resolves itself within two weeks of use. Be careful when driving or participating in activities in which you must stay alert until you are aware of how the medication affects you.
Fatigue
This medication often causes fatigue within a couple of hours after taking a dose and usually resolves with continued use. You may feel more tired than usual the day after taking the medication and until your body is accustomed to its use.
Dry Mouth
Cetirizine hydrochloride works in part by drying out membranes and mucous, which are a common nuisance when suffering from allergies. As a result, you may experience the feeling of dry mouth. Sucking on sugar free candy or drinking cold drinks helps to alleviate this symptom.
