Narcotic pills are prescription medications that are often used to treat severe or chronic pain. However, because these pain medications are able to generate a feeling of euphoria, they are often illicitly used and abused. As a result, if you find an unknown pill in your house, your greatest fear might be that someone is abusing these potent medications. Although it can be difficult to identify unknown pills, just finding out if the pill is a narcotic or not makes the search much simpler.

Step 1

Take the pill to your local doctor or pharmacist. Your doctor will most likely need to look up the pill by comparing it to images of narcotic pain relievers in his reference books. The pharmacist, on the other hand, may ask to hold onto the pill so she can compare it to the pharmacy's stock of prescription pain medication. Either professional will be able to help you identify whether or not your unidentified pill is a narcotic pain reliever.

Step 2

Find the pill in the "Physicians' Desk Reference," a book that can be found at your local hospital or public library. It contains a comprehensive list of medications and provides images for different pills. Looking up your pill using this resource will allow you to ascertain its identity and find out if it is a narcotic pill.

Step 3

Look up your pill using online resources. Pharmer.org has compiled a list of narcotic pills that are organized by their imprint (the letters and numbers found on the sides of pills). You can look up your pill using its narcotic list. If you can't find your pill's imprint on that list, you can use an online pill identifier (such as the one run by Drugs.com), which will allow you to find your pill based on its characteristics.
