Football and baseball are both played on natural surfaces that can change with weather conditions. Regardless of the condition of the playing surface, however, players in both sports need to be able to run and change directions without slipping. Cleats are worn in both sports, but baseball cleats have unique features that make them different from football cleats.
Types
Baseball cleats come in three main types: molded rubber, interchangeable and metal. Molded rubber cleats are used in youth programs, metal cleats are used in high school, college and professional, and interchangeable cleats allow the player to change from rubber to metal. Football cleats come in molded or interchangeable types. Like baseball cleats, molded cleats are used in youth leagues, and interchangeable cleats are used for high school and above.
Function
Both baseball and football cleats are designed to provide traction on natural playing surfaces. They both supply traction for running and changes of direction.
Shoe Style
Football cleats can be found in high-tops, mid-cut or low-cut shoes based on personal preference. Baseball cleats are primarily available in mid-cut and low-cut shoes. High-tops provide the greatest amount of ankle support, while low-cut offers a lightweight cleat designed for speed. Mid-cuts offer a blend of support and lightweight.
Features
Baseball and football cleats offer unique features designed to meet the demands of each sport. For example, baseball cleats can have an added toe plate to the front of the shoe that provides extra support while pitching. Football cleats offer a more solid sole plate that accommodates a wide range of playing surfaces.
Materials
Most cleats for baseball and football are made from leather or synthetics. Leather is the most comfortable as it flexible and breathes well in varying conditions. Synthetics offer a less expensive material to leather, and are often used for reinforcement.
Cleat Length
Interchangeable football cleats can come in a variety of lengths, including 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 or 1 inch. League rules may regulate the maximum cleat length. Longer cleats will provide more traction, but will decrease running speed. Baseball cleats are typically found in lengths of 1/2 inch.
Brands and Prices
Brands such as Under Armour, Nike, Reebok and Adidas produce different models for baseball and football cleats. Based on materials, construction and technology, prices for both baseball and football cleats can range from $40 to $150.
