Many people take antidepressant medications only to be plagued by troublesome side effects and worsening depression. There are some methods that you can try to alleviate your depression without the use of pharmaceutical drugs and the addition of harmful medications to your body.

Exercise

In addition to the many physical benefits, exercising boosts serotonin levels in the brain, and that positively affects the mood. Serotonin imbalances are often the culprit behind depression. If you take a brisk walk, jog or go the gym at least three times a week for 30 minutes to an hour, you may see an improvement in your depression.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy has been used for hundreds of years dating back to the ancient Egyptian culture. Essential oils such as lavender, chamomile, and ylang ylang can be diffused or sprayed into the air or placed in tiny amounts on the wrists. Inhale deeply and feel the effects relax and uplift you.

Meditation

Sitting or lying in a quiet room while taking slow, deep breaths will help to calm your mind. This will allow you to focus on your thoughts and work through your problems. Relaxation in itself also helps alleviate the symptoms of depression.

Music Therapy

According to the American Musical Therapy Association, listening to relaxing music for 20 minutes a day helps resolve depression. Relaxation that is produced by listening to soothing music helps you work through difficult issues and develop a positive outlook on yourself and your situation.
