The use of cod liver oil began centuries ago when the fishing industries in Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Scotland sought refuge in its protection from muscle and joint aches and pains experienced in the bitterly cold weather. Today, cod liver oil has become a popular dietary supplement as medical researchers continue to delve into its powerful composition and become more aware of its health benefits.

Composition

Cod liver oil is a dietary supplement derived from the liver of the Atlantic cold water cod fish in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Cod liver oil is a pale, yellow liquid with a strong, penetrating fishy taste and smell. It is available in capsule form or in a flavored mint or lemon liquid form. It is a rich source of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Among all other foods, cod liver oil contains the highest amounts of vitamins A and D. Cod liver oil provides many health benefits.

Benefits to the Cardiovascular System

The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in cod liver oil work to decrease the production of the chemical thromboxane A2 in the blood. This counteracts the thromboxane A2 effects of causing the blood to clot, increasing blood pressure and the risk of coronary artery disease. The omega-3 fatty acids makes the blood thinner, increases the blood flow and lowers the blood pressure and the risks of heart disease and strokes. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids lower triglycerides and cholesterol.

Study

According to Medline Plus, everal controlled trials of people with a history of heart attack revealed that fish or fish oil omega-3 supplements, when taken regularly, reduce the risk of nonfatal and fatal heart attacks and sudden death. Most of the patients in the trials were also being treated with conventional heart medications. This supports the suggestion that fish oil may enhance the effects of these treatments.

Benefits to the Skeletal System

Vitamin D is essential to the body. It is needed for the proper function, absorption and utilization of the minerals calcium and potassium. Cod liver oil is a rich source of vitamins A and D which promote skeletal growth, strong healthy bones and joints and teeth. Cod liver oil may also improve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, according to Vitamin UK.

Other Benefits

The rich vitamin A content of cod-liver oil promotes improved vision and prevents night blindness. It benefits the skin and mucous membranes, and enhances the immune system. In addition, it is essential for the proper functioning of the testes and ovaries.
