When the pores are enlarged, bacteria, oils and excess sebum can become trapped inside and cause blackheads and acne pustules. In order to prevent pustules and blackheads from forming, it is important to minimize the pores by using a few effective treatments that will flush out the pores and prevent them from becoming enlarged.

Oil Facials

Oil facials work to minimize the pores by flushing oils, sebum and other impurities that have become trapped under the skin. The oil used in the facial bonds to the impurities inside the pores, allowing them to be drained out more easily when steam is applied to the skin. It is important to use a non-comedogenic oil, such as castor, olive or jojoba oil, that will not clog the pores. Once the impurities have been drained out of the skin, the pores will be able to close tighter, and will be smaller as a result. To apply an oil facial, massage 2 tsp. of oil into the skin for 3 minutes, then place a steaming washcloth over the face. Once the washcloth cools down, use it to wipe away the oil. An oil facial can be used daily to flush out the pores.

Natural Exfoliants

Exfoliants remove dead skin, oils and other impurities that could clog the pores and enlarge them. It is important to use exfoliants that are gentle and made of natural substances to prevent the skin from becoming irritated, scratched and damaged. A few gentle exfoliants include raw oats, baking soda, almond meal, and sugar. Avoid rubbing and scrubbing, using circular motions to remove dead skin and impurities while avoiding skin damage. Exfoliate the skin up to three times per week to keep the skin clean and to maintain tight, small pores.

Citrus Toners

Citrus juices contain large amounts of vitamin C, a vitamin that has antioxidant properties and can increase the speed at which skin is sloughed away and new skin cells are produced. When the skin cells are turned over quickly, the pores can remain tighter and clearer. Apply citrus juices by spraying them onto the skin, as a compress or by splashing them onto the skin after cleansing. Lemon and lime juices are especially helpful. A citrus toner can be used frequently, up to three times per day.
