Flag football is one of the most popular forms of the game and is often played at the intramural and recreational level. In areas that are too small to form 11-man varsity tackle football teams, flag football is sometimes played in its place. In flag football, the idea is to create plays that will allow fast players to demonstrate their talent in the open field because it is difficult to grab the thin towel strips that each player wears on his hips. Those are the flags referred to in the title of the game.
How to Win
Step 1
Roll the quarterback out to his strong side. That means to the right if he is right-handed or his left if he is left-handed. It is easier to throw the ball with your dominant hand when you are running to that side. Have the receiver run a square-out when you want to keep possession of the ball. As soon the receiver makes his break, the quarterback throws the ball. However, if the receiver is not open, the quarterback can run.
Step 2
Design a play for the quarterback to throw to the tight end. The tight end should be your top receiver when you want to make a play in the middle of the field. In flag football, this is an advantage because he can run a hook pattern and as soon as he catches the ball, he can lateral a ball to a fast wide receiver who should be following the pattern. If the tight end can lateral the ball before one of his flags gets pulled, it can result in a long play.
Step 3
Toss the ball to your running back on an option play. As the game progresses, your opponent will likely notice that a vast majority of your plays are pass plays. You can give yourself another option by having the quarterback pitch the ball out to the running back who runs toward the far sideline. If he gets a good block or two, he can cut upfield for a big running play. However, if the running play is not blocked he can throw to an open receiver.
Step 4
Run the out-and-go pattern when your team needs a big play. Have your fastest wide receiver run an 8-yard square-out pattern, similar to the play described in Step 1. As the receiver makes his break, have the quarterback pump fake to the receiver. This is designed to get the defensive back covering the receiver to come up and try to intercept the ball. At this point the receiver breaks up the field and the quarterback throws the receiver a strike for a potential touchdown.
