People do not intentionally become addicted to drugs. What starts out as innocent experimentation can quickly lead to an overwhelming and compulsive need to have the drug as frequently as possible, regardless of the consequences. However, by learning the warning signs of drug use and addiction, people can seek early intervention and treatment for themselves or their loved ones before it's too late.

General Signs

Regardless of the drug being abused, there are some common warning signs of drug addictions, explains the popular mental health website HelpGuide.org. Physical signs of drug addiction include changes in appetite or sleep patterns, sudden weight gain or weight loss and changes in speech or coordination. There also may be a deterioration of personal hygiene or declining attractiveness in the person's physical appearance.
Although it may not be noticeable to others, there is also an increased level of tolerance for the drug, meaning the person needs more and more of it in order to achieve the same effect it once had. Behavioral signs of a drug addiction include an unexplained increased need for money, being secretive, declining performance in work or school, a sudden change in friends or hobbies and frequently getting into arguments or trouble.
Psychological signs of a drug addiction include personality changes and frequent mood swings. There is also an intense psychological craving for the drug at all times despite the consequences of doing so, although this sign may not be noticeable to anyone except the addict.

Cocaine

Cocaine users commonly display signs that may alert others to their addiction. A chronic runny nose, especially in the absence of any cold or virus, is one such sign. Frequent nosebleeds are also common. When the addict is high, she may appear restless, jumpy or nervous. Excessive talking, rapid speech and dilated pupils are also common, explains the Mayo Clinic.

Marijuana

People addicted to marijuana also display specific signs of their addiction. Burned or sooty fingers caused by the joints burning down is a common sign, as is a sweet pungent odor on their hair or clothes. Seeds or items used to make homemade devices to smoke the marijuana may also be found in their homes or bedrooms. Bloodshot eyes and a sudden increase in hunger or thirst are indicators that a person has recently used the drug.

Amphetamine

Amphetamine addicts may display signs of hyperactivity, restlessness and manic behavior when they are using the drug. They may appear jumpy, and their hands may be noticeably shaky. Incoherent speech, poor appetite, weight loss and insomnia are also signs of amphetamine use.

Inhalants

Some people do not become addicted to "street" drugs, but instead focus on getting high off of common household substances. These substances may include glue, paint, paint thinner, gasoline or aerosol chemicals. If these types of substances are frequently missing or used more quickly than normal, it may be a sign that a person in the household is addicted to inhaling the substance. Other signs of inhalant use include hostile behavior, aggression, slurred or incoherent speech, slow movements or difficulty moving, problems focusing, stupor, lack of coordination, vomiting, seizures and violent outbursts, according to the Mayo Clinic.
