Many players find that taping their stick is very beneficial to their performance on the ice. This tape is usually applied to the handle of the stick and the hockey stick blade. Taping the blade helps keep condensation away from the puck and provide a rougher surface than the bare blade, making it easier to control the puck on the ice. The tape also provides a thin layer of protection to the blade. Taping the handle makes the stick easier for the player to grip.

Step 1

Unroll 6 to 8 inches of tape and apply the tape to the handle at the base of the knob. Do this so that you can wind the tape around the handle in a spiral.

Step 2

Wind around the handle for 6 to 8 inches, or as far as is comfortable to accommodate your hand. Smooth the tape onto the handle as you wrap it in a tight spiral. Tear the tape from the roll when you are finished.

Step 3

Repeat this farther down the handle where you grip the stick with your other hand, if desired. Many hockey players advise against taping down the entire shaft because taping the middle section can make sliding the stick in your hands difficult. If you are constantly dropping the stick, however, you might want to consider this.

Step 4

Determine how much of the hockey blade you want to tape. Some professional hockey players only choose to tape a few inches of the stick, while others tape the entire thing--it comes down to personal preference.

Step 5

Unroll 6 to 8 inches of tape and apply it about two inches from the tip of the blade. Apply it in such a way that you can wrap it around the blade just as you did with the handle.

Step 6

Continue wrapping until you have wrapped the desired length of the blade. Tear off the excess tape and smooth it down onto the blade.
