Black widow spiders are one of the few types of poisonous spiders in the United States. They usually reside in warm climates, including deserts and the Southeast. They are typically black in color with a red marking on their abdomen that resembles an hourglass. If you think you may have been bitten by a black widow spider, seek medical attention immediately. If possible, trap the spider and take it with you to your doctor. There are several symptoms associated with black widow spider bites.
Pain Around Bite
Almost immediately after being bitten by a black widow, you may develop pain and inflammation in the area of the bite. You may feel a burning sensation and redness will develop. You may be able to see small fang marks where you were bitten.
Itchy Rash
Within a few minutes, an itchy rash may develop around the bite area. You may also get a rash on your abdomen, arms and legs as the poison from the black widow enters your system.
Dizziness
Dizziness is a common symptom of a black widow spider bite, though not everyone experiences it. If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down immediately. Get up slowly when the dizziness subsides.
Nausea and Vomiting
Most people will experience nausea and vomiting within the first hour after being bitten by a black widow spider. This is a result of your body trying to expel the poison.
Headache
Most people experience mild to moderate headaches after being bitten by a black widow spider. Your physician probably will give you medication to alleviate your pain and headaches.
