Cancer is a challenging and sometimes frightening condition that affects most areas of life, diet included. Colon cancer and the treatments prescribed commonly alter an individual's diet needs and preferences, and it is helpful to be educated on some solutions for these situations. A person with colon cancer should work with his doctor to find eating choices that will work for him and supply his body with the necessary nutrition and keep himself informed about his diet options.

Calories

Eating a sufficient amount of calories is one of the top priorities for a person with colon cancer. Cancer places high energy demands on a body that must be met with increased calories. Additionally, damaged or weakened tissues will need to be rebuilt, consequently requiring a cancer patient to augment his calorie intake. Good ways to add healthy calories include eating extra dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese. Avoid low fat options, and mix these foods with other dishes such as casseroles or vegetables. Eggs are a wonderful source of protein and calories. Prepare them hard boiled ahead of time for snacks, or mix beaten raw eggs into sauces, mashed potatoes or other foods that will be cooked further. Nuts and dried fruit are high in calories and are good snacking foods.

Eating Habits

Other lifestyle changes may make a normal eating routine impossible. Using creativity can help a person with cancer adapt to these new needs. During times when nausea or other inhibiting factors are absent, capitalize on the opportunity and eat a large, calorie filled meal. Learn your body's patterns, and make a special effort to eat at certain times of the day or during situations when you know you generally feel better. Try different types of food, and find out what is appealing and acceptable to your body.

Liquids

Juices, milk and broth can be invaluable additions to your diet when you are unable to retain solid foods. Drink these throughout the day between meals or when eating is not possible. Staying hydrated is critical, and liquids can help give your body the fluids it needs while providing valuable calories at the same time.

Nausea

Learn the foods that make you sick---and avoid them. Choose foods that appeal to you and that are easy on your stomach. Small, frequent meals may help reduce the challenge of nausea. As always, drink enough liquids, sipping them slowly throughout the entire day. Even though you are experiencing nausea, it's important not to skip meals and to inform your doctor of your difficulties.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea can be a side effect of colon cancer. Along with other remedies your doctor may prescribe, adjust your diet to help give you needed nutrients during this time. Potassium is lost during diarrhea, and it's important to replace it with potassium rich foods such as apricots and bananas. You will also be losing extra fluid; to compensate for this, drink plenty of water and juice to keep hydrated.
