Many homes have allergens that can affect people with asthma and allergies. People have to do the best they can to control the air quality in their homes when a family member suffers from allergies. It usually takes regular cleaning in certain areas of the home and performing simple tasks to reduce substances that cause allergic reactions.
Dust Mites
Dust is a common allergen for many people with asthma and allergies. The mites can gather in dust that forms in pillows, mattresses and box springs. These items should be cleaned on a regular basis. Many products are dust-mite proof. Plastic covers can be used on pillows, mattresses and box springs. Dust also accumulates on bookshelves and furniture. Stuffed toys can be infested with dust mites. Lack of air kills the mites. You can put stuffed toys in a plastic bag and place it in a freezer for a day or two. Keep all surfaces in the home clean and uncluttered, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Try to avoid carpeting, especially where you spend much of your time. Throw rugs are better because they can be washed and cleaned quickly.
Pollen
Pollen is a big enemy for many allergy sufferers. To keep pollen out of the house, keep all windows closed and doors tightly shut. Air filters can help reduce allergens. Air conditioning is best during warm weather. Change filters often, especially with window units. When dusting, avoid stirring up the dust by cleaning it off with a damp cloth.
Pet Dander
Families with a member who has allergies may have to give a pet to a new home, but the house may still have pet allergens for several weeks or even months. Clean the house thoroughly and replace upholstered furniture. If keeping the furniture, move it to another area other than the bedroom. Replace the carpets and bedding. Use high-efficiency filters to trap any allergens in the air, the Mayo Clinic says. If keeping your pet, bathe the pet frequently and restrict the animal to certain areas in the home. Keep the pet outside as often as possible.
Mold
People allergic to mold have to avoid damp weather as much as they can. You will have to keep your windows closed. Try to reduce moisture in the bathroom and kitchen. Fix any leaks that may cause damp areas. Clean any moldy surfaces you find in the home. Dehumidifiers work to reduce mold.
