Bladder cancer begins most often in the cells that line the inside of the bladder, reports the Mayo Clinic. This type of cancer usually affects older adults, but may prevail at any age. Bladder cancer may be diagnosed by cystoscopy (using a scope to view the bladder lining), biopsy or CT imaging scan. Treatment depends on the stage of cancer that you are diagnosed with but may include surgery, immunotherapy, chemotherapy or radiation. There are some symptoms of bladder cancer that you should be aware of.
Blood in Urine
You may experience blood in your urine (hematuria) if you have bladder cancer. Blood may appear cola colored or bright red in your urine, or may appear in a microscopic examination of your urine, reports the Mayo Clinic. If you experience any type of bleeding with urination, contact your physician. She will examine you and test your urine. She may refer you to a urologist if she suspects anything other than a simple urinary infection.
Painful Urination
Painful urination is a common symptom of bladder cancer. This pain may be mild or severe.
Urinary Frequency and Urgency
You may experience urinary frequency or an increase in urgency with bladder cancer. You may be feeling a strong urge to urinate more frequently than usual. Drink enough fluids during this time. Although this symptom may indicate a urinary tract infection, it may also be indicative of bladder cancer. Seek medical attention immediately.
Abdominal and Back Pain
Some may experience abdominal or back pain with bladder cancer. The pain may be dull or throbbing and may vary in severity.
