A sitz bath is a small portable tub that fits over a toilet bowel. The purpose of a sitz bath is to immerse the buttocks and the area of skin between the genitals and rectum, which is called the perineum, in continuously circulating water. A sitz bath reduces swelling, relieves discomfort or itching and removes blood, stool or urine. According to the National Institutes of Health, a sitz bath is recommended to speed healing after hemorrhoid surgery or an episiotomy. You can purchase a sitz bath at a drug store or medical supply store for approximately $10 to $15. If you follow simple steps, this type of therapeutic bath is easy to use.
Step 1
Lift the toilet lid and seat and then place the sitz bath over the toilet bowel rim. Make sure the front of the bath faces the front of the toilet. Most sitz baths have the front of the bath labeled, and the back has a low ridge along the edge.
Step 2
Fill the sitz bath with 3 to 4 inches of warm water. To prevent burns, don't use water that is hotter than 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 3
Close the clamp connected to the tube leading from the solution bag to the sitz bath and then fill the solution bag with warm water. Inspect the sitz bath to make sure the tubing is inserted in the front of the bath.
Step 4
Hang or hold the solution bag above the toilet. You can hang it on a towel bar if one is available.
Step 5
Sit on the sitz bath and unclamp the tubing. The water will continuously flow into the basin, and vents on the side will prevent it from overflowing.
Step 6
Refill the solution bag with warm water as needed. Sit on the basin and soak your buttocks and perineum for 10 to 30 minutes.
Step 7
Pat your buttocks and perineum dry with a soft towel.
Step 8
Remove the basin, empty the water and clean it with soap and water.
Step 9
Repeat the sitz bath three to four times a day.
Tips and Warnings
- Your doctor may recommend that you add salt, vinegar, ice, baking soda or medication to the water. You can wear a loose robe or place a blanket over your upper body if you get chilled.
- Slowly stand up from the sitz bath in case you feel dizzy.
