Common Side Effects of Valtrex

Valacyclovir is the generic name of a medication sold as Valtrex in the United States. It is a prescription medication used to treat herpes, a sexually transmitted disease, cold sores and chickenpox. It is used to treat genital herpes, shingles or herpes zoster and cold sores, also known as known as herpes labialis. The Mayo Clinic states the medication is not a herpes cure, but helps treat the discomfort and pain of the condition.

Mental Problems

When you are treated with Valtrex, you may find you have some common side effects related to your mental condition. Serious side effects such as empty and sad feeling as well as discouragement resemble symptoms of mental depression and may be connected to taking Valtrex if you did not have these feelings before taking it. Another common serious side effect of valacyclovir is irritability. You may find yourself getting easily annoyed at the actions of other people or you may be irritated with yourself and common tasks. You also may not feel the same pleasure you normally do or be as interested in the things you enjoy when taking Valtrex. There also is the potential for the medication affecting your concentration. The Mayo Clinic states you should call your physician immediately if you have any of these problems when you take Valtrex.

Sleep Problems

Tiredness is a common side effect Valtrex. You may also have problems falling or staying asleep when taking the drug.

Physical Problems

You may have pains or aches throughout your body or in specific locations without apparent cause. Cramps may occur in your muscles, or you may find your muscles stiff or painful. You could find it difficult to move normally when taking Valtrex and your ears may become congested. You may have signs of the flu such as nasal congestion, a runny nose, sneezing and a sore throat. You may lose your voice temporarily, and you may bleed heavily from wounds or cuts.
