When the skin is affected by acne breakouts, it can be easy to over-medicate it with over-the-counter acne products. This can cause skin irritations such as peeling, itching, redness and burning. When side effects occur on the skin from using medicated acne products, it can exacerbate acne and skin conditions and make the skin extremely sensitive. Fortunately, the skin can be cleared without irritation by using a few lower concentration acne treatment products in the proper way.

Step 1

Cleanse the skin thoroughly, yet gently, using a sensitive skin soap. Wet your hands and lather them well with the sensitive skin soap. Apply the lather to the face, moving your fingers around the entire area. After 1 to 2 minutes, rinse off the skin with water. Cleanse the skin twice per day.

Step 2

Apply a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream. Squeeze a dime-sized amount of the 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream onto your fingers, and gently spread the cream onto your face. Glide your fingers over the skin until the cream has been completely absorbed into the skin. Apply the benzoyl peroxide cream twice per day after cleansing.

Step 3

Apply an oil-free moisturizing lotion. Squeeze a nickle-sized amount of oil-free moisturizing lotion onto your fingers, and smooth the lotion over your skin. Gently massage the lotion into the skin until it has soaked in. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the skin, which can exacerbate acne and cause irritation. Apply the oil-free moisturizer to the skin twice per day after using the benzoyl peroxide cream.

Tips and Warnings

  • Skin affected by acne is generally more sensitive than normal and can become irritated easily if a regular facial soap is used to cleanse the skin. By using a soap that is formulated for sensitive skin types, the skin can be effectively cleansed without becoming irritated. There are many different strengths of benzoyl peroxide creams, including 2.5 percent, 5 percent and 10 percent concentrations. By using the 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream, acne can be eliminated without the skin becoming irritated and inflamed. If benzoyl peroxide cream is used without following it with a moisturizer, the skin can become overly dry and red. It is helpful to use an oil-free moisturizer, which will keep the skin properly softened without clogging the pores.
