1. Reduce Swelling in Nasal Passages
The pain of a sinus headache results from swollen nasal passages. When the nasal passages swell, mucus can't drain as it should. Consequently, it builds up in the sinuses and causes painful pressure. Reducing the swelling of the nasal passages can relieve your sinus headache. Apply a topical vasoconstrictor that works directly on the blood vessels in your nasal lining. Decongestant nasal sprays can be habit-forming and should not be used more than 3 days in a row. Decongestants are also available in pill form, but they are not as effective as nasal sprays. Corticosteriod nasal sprays reduce inflammation, but they can take days or even weeks to attain full effectiveness. Antihistamines can reduce sinus swelling when allergies are an issue. Discuss an appropriate course of treatment with your doctor.
2. Treat the Infection, Cure the Headache
The only way to cure a sinus headache is to treat the underlying infection, usually sinusitis. This bacterial infection is treated with antibiotics. It can take time for the infection to abate. However, when it does, the headache usually goes with it. If you still have sinus headaches after finishing a course of antibiotics, it's possible that the drugs were not strong enough; you may require a second course. Alternatively, the persistence of your sinus headache after antibiotic treatment could indicate that you are suffering from tension headaches or migraines. Ask your doctor for an evaluation.
3. Temporary Relief With Self-Care Remedies
While treating a sinus infection with antibiotics, address your headache with over-the-counter pain relievers and at-home remedies. Flushing your sinuses with saline solution can reduce the pressure in your nasal cavities. Use a nasal irrigator, saline nasal spray or a "neti pot," all typically available at your local pharmacy, health store or drugstore. Hot compresses and steam inhalation can loosen mucus for better drainage. Reducing the amount of mucus in your sinuses will alleviate pressure and pain.
