There are a number of ways to remove unwanted hair. Many offer only temporary results, such as tweezing, shaving, waxing and depilatories. Regular use is the only way in which you can obtain a hair-free appearance. For more permanent forms of hair removal, you'll need to talk to a doctor or dermatologist. These health care providers have other products and procedures available that provide long-term results.

Step 1

Start using eflornithine. Eflornithine is a topical prescription used to slow down the growth of facial hair in women, advises the Mayo Clinic. This medication works by impeding the enzymes necessary to cause facial hair growth. Apply directly to the skin each day for best results.

Step 2

Try at-home laser hair removal. With this process of hair removal, a handheld device emits fairly low levels of light or laser energy that's absorbed by the melanin found in your hair. This causes the melanin to increase the temperature within the hair itself, disintegrating the shaft and damaging the follicle. Use every two to three weeks to reduce the amount of unwanted hair.

Step 3

Invest in laser hair removal. Much like the at-home devices, professional laser hair removal exposes areas of the skin with unwanted hair to laser energy. This energy isn't as low level as at-home devices, but still shouldn't damage the skin. It's absorbed by the melanin, increasing the temperature of the shaft and follicle. And according to the American Academy of Dermatology, it should reduce the amount of hair on the skin.

Step 4

Use electrolysis. The American Electrology Association claims that electrolysis provides permanent hair removal. Electrical impulses are administered directly into the follicle, damaging its structure and causing it to no longer produce hair. Unlike laser hair removal, each follicle must be treated for hair-free results.

Tips and Warnings

  • Remove hair from the skin prior to the first application of eflornithine, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Use each day until you experience hair growth, then remove unwanted hair prior to application as before.
  • Unlike at-home laser hair removal kits, at-home electrolysis shouldn't be used. They may cause scarring to the skin and infection in the treated follicles.

Things You'll Need
