Common Side Effects of Zyprexa

Zyprexa is a brand name in the United States of olanzapine, a medication used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It may be administered as a pill or as an intravenous shot. The intravenous version is called Zyprexa IntraMuscular or Zyprexa Relprevv, an extended-release version of the drug. The pill is marketed as Zyprexa and Zyprexa Zydis. The Mayo Clinic states none of the drug's versions should be used to treat Alzheimer's disease or dementia because there is a risk of death.

Bodily Motion Problems

Zyprexa commonly causes some serious side effects that affect how you move your body. For example, it may produce a change in the way you balance yourself or in the way you walk. It can make you unsteady and clumsy. Zyprexa can make your body move without your control, particularly in your back, neck or face, or it may make your body twist. Shaking and trembling also may occur in the feet, hands and fingers. You may be unable to control your balance and you may find it difficult to speak. The Mayo Clinic also reports side effects such as a sensation or desire to continue moving. You may find your bodily motions slowed down and your face may look like a mask without movement. Leg and arm stiffness and stiffness in other parts of the body also may occur. Muscles may jerk and tremble. When you walk, you may shuffle your feet. Tell your physician immediately if you experience any body movement difficulties while taking Zyprexa.

Visual Problems

Taking Zyprexa may induce some serious side effects in vision. The drug may impair your vision or change the way you see. For example, you suddenly may have problems seeing near or far objects or people. It also can make vision blurry. Call your doctor about these side effects.

Digestive Problems

Common side effects of Zyprexa that are not serious and should disappear as you continue treatment may include digestive problems. For example, you may have a sour stomach while taking it, or you may belch or feel a sensation of heartburn or indigestion. Your appetite may increase with olanzapine use or it may be lacking. There also is the potential for constipation and gaining weight.

Mental Problems

Olanzapine also may produce some mental side effects that also are not serious and should recede with more use of the medicine. These relatively common temporary side effects include concentration difficulties, personality changes, feelings of emptiness and sadness, pleasure or interest decreases and discouragement. Tell your doctor if these side effects continue.
