If the bags under your eyes are so large they've turned into luggage, it's time to look for an under-eye treatment to reduce the swelling. Puffy eyes can occur as a result of improper sleep, allergies andfluid retention in the face. According to the Mayo Clinic, puffy eyes are not a serious condition and do not usually require treatment from a doctor. Puffy eyes can be treated using home remedies and items available at the drugstore.
Step 1
Eat less salt and drink less alcohol. Sodium and alcoholic beverages both cause fluid retention, which can make eyes appear puffy. Cut down on foods like potato chips and other salty snacks, and drink alcoholic beverages sparingly.
Step 2
Place two or three pillows under your head while you sleep. Adding extra pillows will elevate your head, encouraging the drainage of fluids in the under-eye area.
Step 3
Apply a cold compress to the under-eye area. Wrap ice cubes in a wash cloth and apply them to the eye area, suggests dermatology professor, Marianne O'Donoghue, M.D. The cold compress will reduce swelling under the eyes for several hours.
Step 4
Sleep more. Adult men and women should get between 7 and 8 hours per night of sleep, states the Mayo Clinic.
Step 5
Limit your exposure to allergens. Allergies can cause fluid to accumulate under the eyes as histamines build up in the body. For temporary relief, take an antihistamine to reduce swelling. To prevent puffy eyes in the future, avoid allergens when possible.
