Botanical medicine can be extremely useful as a naturopathic method for enhancing male sexual vitality. When used appropriately, medicinal herbs like yohimbe, tribulus and tongkat ali present a safe, over-the-counter alternative to prescription drugs. These potent medicinal herbs enhance bloodflow to the genitals, improve sexual stamina and support healthy testosterone levels. However, like all medicinally active plants, these products may be associated with some side effects. As always, consult an expert before taking any medicinal herb, particularly if you have a medical condition.
Yohimbe
According to the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), the evergreen shrub yohimbe has a long history as a botanical aphrodisiac. Strong evidence supports this traditional use; in fact, yohimbine hydrochloride-- an extract of the plant-- is sold as Procomil, a prescription treatment for erectile dysfunction. Unfortunately, this powerful herbal medicine is associated with several side effects and drug interactions; those with medical conditions should use it only under a doctor's supervision.
Tongkat Ali
Tongkat ali, another popular herb for male enhancement, is reputed to increase testosterone levels and increase male libido. In 2000, a study at the Science University of Malaysia investigated tongkat ali's effect on castrated rats. The study found that the herb "produced a dose-dependent increase in sexual performance of the treated animals" and strongly supported its traditional use as an aphrodisiac. Side effects of tongkat ali are rare and mild compared to those associated with yohimbe.
Tribulus
Like tongkat ali, tibulus terrestris is commonly sold as an herbal testosterone booster; however, its effects on testosterone production are fairly subtle. In a review of several animal tests, the medical journal Phytomedicine concluded that tribulus shows promise as a treatment for mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. Those without erectile dysfunction also frequently use tribulus to enhance sexual performance. Tribulus is generally well-tolerated and associated with few side effects.
