People diet for a number of reasons--to lose weight, clear up a health concern or simply because they want to prevent future health issues. Whatever the reason, being too regimented or making major changes can make it hard to stick to a diet. Thankfully, there are things you can do to make dieting easier to stick with.

Add Good Habits

The Mayo Clinic website recommends adding some good habits to your diet routine. Start out with a healthy breakfast, but don't eat too much. Increase the number of fruits and vegetables you consume each day. Add healthy fats with omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. These include oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and tuna. Nuts and olives also contain healthy fats. Increase your fiber intake by eating plenty of whole grains throughout the day. Eat as much fresh food as you can and avoid too much processed food. Record the food you eat so you know how many calories you're consuming each day.

Break Bad Habits

The Mayo Clinic website recommends breaking some bad habits. Avoid watching television while you eat. Avoid processed sugar and only snack on fruits and vegetables. Eat small portions of lean meat and dairy. If you're on a diet, make sure any restaurant you frequent has foods that you are allowed to eat.

Lifestyle Changes

Rather than call your plan a diet, consider making it a complete lifestyle change. If your method of losing weight conflicts with your lifestyle, you're setting yourself up for failure. Make healthy eating habits permanent and refrain from telling people you're dieting.

Limit Fast Food

Try to avoid fast-food restaurants. However, if you must eat fast food, opt for the healthy items on the menu. Look for fruit, yogurt, salads and grilled foods. Avoid anything fried or sugary. Sodas are off limits.

Meatless Monday

Choose one night per week to go meatless. It doesn't have to be Monday, but starting out the week with a meatless meal will get you off to a healthy, low-fat start. Select entrees that provide protein without the unhealthy fats found in some meats.

Read Labels

Before putting a box or can of processed food into your cart, read the label and then decide if that's something you want to put in your body. You'll want to avoid trans fats, high fructose corn syrup and many other unhealthy ingredients. Also check the serving sizes. What you might consider to be a single serving may be two or three.

Don't Compare

Avoid comparing yourself to others. If you aren't losing weight at the same rate as another dieter, you may be discouraged and quit. Instead, be happy for any success you have and find a non-food way to reward yourself.
