Long, lush locks are in demand, and are, unfortunately, elusive for many people outside of Hollywood. If you want longer hair but are stuck with a short crop, or if your locks just go limp after a certain length, take heart -- there are ways to grow your hair longer and fuller without paying a fortune or investing in extensions. By taking extra precautions with your hair and giving it nourishing care, you can help your hair grow long.

Step 1

Start fresh by getting your hair trimmed. Have all the dead ends snipped off so that your hair is healthy and ready to grow. You usually don't need to trim more than an inch or two to get rid of the split ends, so there's no need for a drastic cut. Go back for a trim every six to eight weeks.

Step 2

Keep your hair healthy by using a nourishing shampoo and conditioner. Use products designed to strengthen and moisturize hair. Try to avoid heat styling such as flat ironing, curling or blow-drying your hair, as this will damage and dry out your hair, making it harder to grow.

Step 3

Take hair growth supplements, which contain vitamins and minerals that strengthen hair and promote hair growth, such as vitamin E and a variety of B vitamins. You can find hair growth supplements in major beauty supply stores. Some hair growth supplements are similar to multivitamins and have a range of ingredients, and some have one or two major ingredients just for hair. Consult your doctor before taking any supplements if you are on medication or have any pre-existing conditions. Eating a well-balanced diet that includes protein, B vitamins and vitamin E will also help ensure your hair grows longer and stronger.

Step 4

Avoid harsh chemicals on your hair that may damage it and cause it to fall out. Hair dye, for instance, weakens and breaks hair, especially if you leave the dye on for too long. Bleach is especially damaging and should be avoided.

Step 5

Take precautions when brushing and combing your hair. Do not brush your hair more than necessary, as it will cause pieces of hair to fall out. Also, avoid brushing your hair when it's wet, as that is when it's most fragile. Use a wide-toothed comb when combing your hair, and avoid plastic combs in favor of wooden ones.

Step 6

Protect your hair from the elements. If you will be out in the sun all day or are in a polluted environment, use a protective conditioner and styling products with SPF, or cover your hair with a hat or scarf. In wintertime, your hair can still soak up UV rays, so continue using SPF products, and use extra moisturizing conditioner to protect against drying wind and artificial heat.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are in a hurry and have to blow-dry your hair, protect it first by spraying in a leave-in conditioner.
