The candida diet is an alternative health remedy for people with symptoms that may be caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans yeast. This condition may be diagnosed by alternative health care practitioners after considering symptoms that may include chronic gas and bloating, headaches, extreme fatigue, anxiety, hyperactivity, poor memory and concentration, cravings for sweets or alcohol, and infections such as vaginitis, oral thrush or athlete's foot. It's possible to individualize the diet to some degree. The primary focus of the candida diet is eliminating added sugar and limiting carbohydrates. The beginning of any candida diet involves cleansing the body's systems, clearing debris from the colon and flushing away some of the yeast in the body, as explained by TheCandidaDiet.com. After you cleanse your system, you can begin using natural remedies to eliminate the excess Candida albicans yeast.

Step 1

Undergo a colonic irrigation. This step is not essential, but is the best way to cleanse your colon and flush out your system, according to TheCandidaDiet.com. Alternative health care practitioners provide this therapy, in which they infuse large amounts of liquid into the colon through a tube inserted in the rectum.

Step 2

Fast with water for one day, and then begin a healthy juice fast. Use fresh organic vegetables and fruits for this fast, and continue drinking plenty of water. Juice the ingredients with a juicer or blender. Continue the juice fast for at least two days and up to a week.

Step 3

Break the fast with fresh organic vegetables and fruits for a day or two. Do not include sugary vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, yams, potatoes, corn, squash, beets, peas, parsnips and beans. Eat vegetables raw, steamed or grilled. Adding a little garlic, butter and salt for flavor is acceptable, according to TheCandidaDiet.com.

Step 4

Take psyllium with meals. Add 1 or 2 tsp. of this natural fiber to a glass of water and drink it with a meal once or twice daily. You can take more psyllium if you prefer, up to the amount recommended on the label.

Step 5

Begin the next phase of the candida diet. This phase lasts two to three weeks. You'll avoid all forms of sugar that do not occur naturally in foods, as well as all grain products. The diet also excludes yeast, alcohol, caffeine, preservatives and other additives, and refined and processed foods. The only dairy products allowed are yogurt, butter and a small amount of cottage cheese.

Tips and Warnings

  • You may want to consult a health care practitioner before making drastic changes to your diet, especially those involving fasting. This is particularly important if you have another chronic health condition such as diabetes. A doctor or other health care practitioner can work with you on ways to safely start the candida diet.
