Male Fertility Foods

Nutrition plays a crucial role in male fertility. Deficiencies in common micronutrients such as zinc and folic acid can cause a decline in sperm count and sexual performance. Several foods--many of which are traditional aphrodisiacs--can provide the nutritional basis necessary for improving fertility in men. In many cases, a balanced diet improves fertility within a few weeks. However, men experiencing persistent infertility may have an underlying condition that hinders sperm production or motility. An expert evaluation may be necessary.

Oysters

According to a 2005 report published in the Sydney Morning Herald, oysters contain a high concentration of two rare amino acids. These compounds stimulate the production of testosterone in men and may enhance their sexual vitality. Oysters are also an excellent source of zinc, an important mineral in the production of healthy sperm.

Pumpkin Seed

Another excellent source of zinc, pumpkin seeds provide many of the nutritional building blocks for enabling male fertility. Pumpkin seeds may also support the health of the prostate. A Jamaican study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that pumpkin seed reduced prostate swelling in rats.

Leafy Greens

Green foods such as collards, arugula, spinach and kale contain large amounts of folate a B-vitamin involved in both male and female fertility. Green foods also provide some of the much-needed trace minerals involved in sperm synthesis.
