Abraham Lincoln said that most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. Acquiring the ability to see the bright side throughout the inevitable ups and downs of life can go a long way to living a contented life. Harvard University psychology professor Daniel Gilbert says happiness lies not in the accumulation of possessions, but from other people who bring joy to your life. There are a number of simple things you can do throughout your day that can lift your spirits and make you feel happier.
Change Your Outlook
Changing your perspective can change your life, according to James Madison University. The next time a rude driver cuts you off the road, stop and think for a moment before reacting. Is it really worth getting worked up over or will all be forgotten in short order? Rather than shaking your fist at the rude motorist, try waving. His surprised reaction may bring a smile to your face.
Choose Upbeat Friends
As the old saying goes, "You are the company you keep." Try to spend your free time with upbeat people who have a positive outlook on life and support you in your endeavors. Limit the time you spend with friends who belong to the "Ain't it awful club" of life. These people are always focused on what is wrong. Exposing yourself to such negativity can rob you of your enthusiasm for life.
Count Your Blessings
Someone once said just imagine how happy you would be if you lost everything you have right now and got it all it back. An attitude of gratitude can go a long way toward happiness. Make a list of all the things in life that you are thankful for. Then start an ongoing list of the positive things that happen throughout the day, such as a store clerk having a few kind words that brightened your mood.
Mix Things Up
Life can seem like a chore when you move through the same rituals day in and day out. Changing your routine can help lift the monotony that may be weighing you down. Take a different route on your daily walk. When the weather is warm take your lunch to a park instead of sitting in the office. Also, stop putting off your least favorite chores for last. When you do the unpleasant tasks first, you can feel good for the rest of the day.
Help Others
Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves, said Scottish author and dramatist James M. Barrie. If your elderly neighbor is struggling to bring in the groceries take five minutes to walk over and assist her. Making another person's day a little brighter can do wonders for your own sense of well being
