Baseball players first started using gloves around 1875. Over time, baseball gloves have evolved into very specialized pieces of equipment. There are many different types of gloves and sizes available for specific positions. For example, middle infielders, pitchers, outfielders, first basemen and catchers all have specific gloves with different measurements. Finding the correct measurement of a baseball glove is crucial for every ball player.
Step 1
Find the highest point of the glove. This is typically the index finger of the glove. Put the end of the seamstress tape measure at the point.
Step 2
Slowly take the tape down the index finger right next to the inside of the pocket. Continue taking the tape straight down the palm--or heel--of the glove. The tape measure should fold down the glove without having any space between the tape measure and glove.
Step 3
Mark the tape measure at the bottom-most point of the glove. This is typically the inside of the wrist opening. Record the measurement in inches for the glove height.
Tips and Warnings
- Double-check the measurement by measuring the glove two or three times. Follow the same procedure for measuring first basemen gloves. Though not always enforced, professional baseball has a 12-inch maximum height for a glove; younger children's gloves (5- to 8-year-olds) should measure between 10 and 11 inches; for 9- to 12-year-olds, between 11 and 11.5 inches; and between 11 and 11.5 inches (infield) and 12 to 12.5 inches (outfield) for all others.
