Damaged hair can be caused by exposure to sun, chlorine, excessive heat or styling, hair coloring or perming. If your hair feels gummy when it is wet, breaks easily or looks dry and lifeless, your hair is damaged. You can bring it back to life with home remedies and over-the-counter treatments.

Types

Over-the-counter treatments for damaged hair include conditioners that contain protein, and deep conditioning treatments, according to dermatologist Dr. Thomas Goodman, Jr. Mix a homemade hair mask by combining avocado, olive oil, a banana and mayonnaise, then mix thoroughly and apply it directly to the hair, according to an article in "Cosmopolitan" magazine. Trim the end of severely damaged hair every two weeks to remove old, frayed ends.

Significance

Damaged hair begins to develop small nicks in it, the more it is exposed to damaging elements. Severely damaged hair contains so many small divots that the hair eventually breaks off. Hair that is exposed to continual damage may break off at the crown, get tangled more easily, or feel like straw. Severely damaged hair may fall out completely.

Benefits

Products containing fats, oils and protein fill in breaks and gaps in the hair follicle to make hair smoother, glossier and more manageable. Natural oils create a more glossy, healthy appearance. Wash damaged hair every other day, if possible. Apply deep conditioning treatments once a week for up to an hour to allow the oil and protein of the treatment to absorb into the hair.

Considerations

When moisture is absorbed into the hair strands, the hair becomes weak. Therefore, do not brush damaged hair when it is wet. Hair that is wet will break more easily than hair that is dry, particularly if it is brushed or pulled. Spray damaged hair with a detangling spray, then leave it to air dry. To prevent further damage to the hair, do not blow dry it.

Prevention

Wear damaged hair under a hat when it is exposed to the sun, and place it under a bathing cap when it is exposed to chlorinated water in a swimming pool. To protect the integrity of the hair, do not blow dry, straighten or curl damaged hair. Do not perm hair or use styling products like hairspray, mousse or gel, if possible. Do not frequently color hair that is damaged, particularly with products containing hydrogen peroxide or bleach.
