Before you can start fishing, you must be sure to get all of your tackle and equipment together. While most people concentrate on bait or lures when fishing, it is also important that your lines are set up correctly. With a little practice, setting up fishing line can be a cinch.
Step 1
Begin by attaching the line to the real. This will typically be a monofilament line or something similar. Loop the line around the spool two times. Secure the line by forming an overhand knot with the short end of the line, and tie it around the main line. Repeat this knot, and pull the line tightly.
Step 2
Wind the line onto the spool until it is 3/4 of the way full. Pull the line tightly to maintain tension while spooling. This prevents loops and loose areas of line on the spool.
Step 3
Thread the line through the guide eyes of the rod, leaving enough line from the end of the rod to secure various types of tackle to be attached.
Step 4
Attach a hook, spinner, lure or other type of tackle. Secure the tackle by threading the line through the eye of the hood or lure, then twisting the short end around the main line six or seven times. Pull the short end of the line back through the small loop created above the eye of the hook, moisten and pull tightly. Trim any excess line.
Step 5
If needed, attach a float or weight. Make sure this is well above the hook.
