Acne blemishes are a common skin condition that can cause pus-filled bumps to appear on the skin. Although there are many types of skin care products that are designed to dry up and eliminate acne, they can often irritate the skin and exacerbate inflammation. Fortunately, there are a few home remedies that can effectively reduce and eliminate acne pustules without irritating the skin or causing such side effects as peeling, redness or burning.

Step 1

Steam the skin to open the pores, says Acne-treatment-guru.com. Fill a large bowl with boiling water. Lean 12 to 18 inches over the bowl, and cover the head with a towel to force the steam to billow over the face. After five minutes, lift up the head and splash the skin with cool water. Repeat up to three times per week.

Step 2

Exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin cells. Combine 1 tbsp. baking soda, 1 tsp. lemon juice, 1 tbsp. ground raw oats and 2 tbsp. honey in a bowl. Spread the mixture over moistened skin and massage it into the skin for three minutes using small, circular movements with the fingers. Wipe off the mixture back into the bowl, then rinse off the skin with warm water. Pat the face dry with a towel. Repeat up to three times per week after steaming the face.

Step 3

Dry up acne pustules with calamine lotion, suggests Healthguidance.org. Dip a cotton swab into calamine lotion and dab the lotion onto the acne breakouts. Leave it on the skin for at least an hour before rinsing it off with water. Repeat up to three times per week after exfoliating the skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Helpful Information: Steaming the skin opens the pores, which will help the skin release trapped oils, sebum, dirt and bacteria that cause acne. It is important when steaming the face to stay at least 12 inches above the bowl to avoid scalding the skin. Applying a facial scrub helps remove dead skin, which can build up and clog the pores, leading to blackheads and pustules. It is important to use natural, gentle exfoliants, such as baking soda or oats, which will remove dead skin without scratching the face. Calamine lotion is a mineral lotion that is usually used to dry up the blisters caused by a chickenpox virus. Calamine lotion is also helpful in drying up acne pustules and can be used for long periods of time without irritating the skin.
