Dark circles can appear under the eyes as a result of exhaustion, illness, allergies or heredity. It can be difficult to identify the cause of your dark under eye circles, but it is possible to diminish and reduce them by applying a few helpful and soothing home remedies.
Vitamin K Eye Massage
Using a vitamin K cream around the eyes helps promote the proper circulation of the blood cells in the skin. Massaging the eye area also increases blood circulation and decreases congestion in the skin. By combining massage with the use of vitamin K cream, you can significantly decrease the appearance of darkness underneath the eyes. Using a pea-sized amount of vitamin K cream, massage the eye area using small, circular finger motions for five minutes twice per day. If you experience side effects from using vitamin K cream, such as redness, swelling, irritation or burning, discontinue use and ask a dermatologist if you may have a contact allergy.
Black Tea Bags
Black tea bags contain caffeine, which contracts the blood vessels in the skin and can significantly help reduce the appearance of darkness under the eyes. The tea bags should be soaked briefly in water, then refrigerated for 30 minutes prior to application. The eyes should be closed and looking upward to expose the more affected area under the eyes; place tea bags on the eyes for at least 10 minutes twice per day. Because black tea can stain the skin, rinse skin well after use.
Cucumber Slices
Cucumber slices contain natural anti-inflammatory properties that can decrease puffiness around the eyes, which often contribute to the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. To use cucumber slices on the eyes, a whole cucumber should be refrigerated for at least one hour. Then slice off two 1/8-inch thick slices. Place slices onto closed eyes and allowed to remain there for at least 15 minutes twice per day.
Ice
Ice reduces swelling and inflammation in the skin and shrinks capillaries in the skin. When applied to the eyes, ice can help minimize dark circles. It is important to wrap the ice in a thin towel before applying it to the eyes to minimize any discomfort that may result. The ice should be used twice per day for five minutes.
