The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that produces hormones. These hormones regulate the metabolism in the body. For various reasons, the thyroid may not produce enough of these hormones, creating a condition called hypothyroidism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include weight gain, hair loss and dry skin, according to Medline Plus. Cytomel--the brand name for the medication liothyronine---treats hypothyroidism. A physician's prescription is necessary to receive this medication.

Uses

In addition to reversing the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism, Cytomel treats other conditions associated with the thyroid gland. This prescription medication also treats goiter, which is an enlarged thyroid gland. When left untreated, hypothyroidism advances to myxedema. This rare condition may become life-threatening, with symptoms such as lowered blood pressure and a decrease in breathing. Cytomel---in combination with other medications--also treats symptoms associated with myxedema. Some individuals experience infertility associated with hypothyroidism. Cytomel may increase fertility in these individuals.

Administration

The common prescription instructions for Cytomel include taking one tablet by mouth once a day. Store the medication at room temperature. Hypothyroidism is a condition that requires medication for replacement therapy for the remainder of an individual's life.

Dosage

The dosage varies from person to person, according to the Mayo Clinic. The physician determines the best dosage based on laboratory values and symptoms. A common starting dose for treatment of hypothyroidism in adults is 25 mcg daily. Increases to the dose occur once every week to two weeks until an effective dose is reached.

Side Effects

Side effects associated with taking Cytomel include weight loss, insomnia and gastrointestinal distress. This distress includes symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and cramping. Serious side effects of Cytomel include symptoms associated with a toxic level of the medication. These symptoms include chest pain, an increased heart rate, sweating and intolerance to heat, according to Drugs.com.

Precautions

Although a side effect of Cytomel is weight loss, the medication is not intended for treatment of obesity. Individuals without hypothyroidism may experience toxic levels of the medication when used improperly.
Some individuals may experience hair loss when beginning Cytomel, according to Drugs.com. This condition is normally temporary.
Individuals who also suffer from diabetes mellitus may need adjustments to insulin or oral medication used to treat diabetes while taking Cytomel.
