Everybody goes through a time where they have felt depressed. Some people seem to be able to "snap out of it" while others need more intervention. For those individuals, going to therapy or taking medications may be what is needed for them to feel normal again. However, there are some skills that you can learn to try to beat your depression before it consumes you.

Origins of Depression

First, you must figure out why you are feeling depressed. By knowing the origin, you can start to work on it from there. For example, if you lost your job and are depressed about it, actively start looking for new jobs instead of dwelling about the lost job.

Behavioral Activation

Depression does not usually go away on its own. Like many other things, depression needs to be worked at to alleviate. Physical exercise is often recommended as an adjunct way to help alleviate depression.

Therapy

For many people, therapy can help with depression. Therapy consists of talking individually to a therapist about what issues you are going through and finding ways in which you can return to a state of normal functioning.

Medications

Psychotropic medications are used in conjunction with therapy or on their own. These typically include antidepressants and are often given by psychiatrists or primary care physicians.
