Being a teenager can be challenging. As a teen, you likely face many different issues, such as dealing with your parents, friends, love, dating, sex, grades, sports, working, driving and siblings. Decisions that you make while a teenager will contribute to what kind of person you will grow up to become, and some of the decisions you make will have consequences that will change your life forever. Learn how to cope with any problems you might be having right now, as having these coping skills can help you throughout your life.
Step 1
Seek out an adult you trust to talk to who can provide you with advice and help you find solutions to any problems you are having. Turn to your mother or father if you can, or seek out a counselor, religious leader, school nurse or older family member who you trust.
Step 2
Make sure to discover a way that helps you gain clarity on your thoughts and emotions to help you make important decisions, such as where you will attend college. Get into a regular routine that can help you calm your mind, such as writing in a journal, running, riding your bicycle, meditating or going for a walk. Try to base your decisions in logic rather than just emotion; this will demonstrate maturity on your part. Try to maintain a positive attitude toward whatever happens to you, even if these events can feel unpleasant at times. Try to view everything that happens to you as an opportunity to grow and become a better person.
Step 3
Be honest, even if you get grounded by your parents as a result. By being truthful, your parents will be more willing to trust you, even when you face challenging situations. Keep in mind the fact that it is a lot harder to regain your parents' trust once you lose it than it is to simply maintain it by being honest. Being honest also prevents you from having to make up many stories to cover up the one white lie you tell.
Step 4
Do your best not to succumb to peer pressure. Try to base your decisions on the kind of life you wish to lead rather than what can make you more popular in the present moment. Stay away from smoking, drinking, using drugs, extreme dieting, overeating, cheating on tests and bullying other teenagers, as all these activities will make you feel bad, particularly down the road.
