Many people begin a diet with the best of intentions, but something happens, and the diet stalls. They may reach a plateau or start to lose self-control. Employ some helpful tips from successful dieters to make it through the difficult times that are inherent with any diet plan.

Hydration

Most people don't realize that often when they think they're hungry, they're actually thirsty. One trick is to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day; this will help make dieters feel less hungry. Water has no calories, and it is good for flushing toxins from the body. Cold water may even speed up the metabolism, since the body has to work to bring its temperature back up.

Movement

To prevent eating out of boredom, dieters should get up and move around more. In addition to keeping their hands busy and not using them to eat with, dieters will burn additional calories. Activity also increases the metabolism.

Shopping Wisely

In order to prevent consuming vast quantities of fats, sugars and other empty calories, dieters should not bring unhealthy foods into the house. Dieters should make a list when they go to the grocery store and stick to it. They should avoid the temptation to stock up unhealthy sale items, just because they're a bargain.

Prepackaged Items

For dieters who can't abstain from eating unhealthy snacks, they should purchase prepackaged 100-calorie snacks, which are made by several different companies, and eat just one a day.

Soup

Instead of sitting down to dinner hungry, dieters can ward off their appetite a bit with a bowl of soup at least 10 minutes before eating the main part of the meal. Dieters will feel fuller before eating a larger meal, and will usually be satisfied with less. The best soup for dieters is broth based, low sodium and low fat.

Hobbies

Instead of watching television with idle hands, dieters should take up a hobby to keep their hands busy. Dieters can still watch television, but engage in activities such as working puzzles or knitting while watching.

Smaller Plates and Bowls

Dieters may want to purchase dinner plates and bowls that are smaller than average. This helps with portion control because it takes less food to fill smaller plates and bowls.

A Day Off

Dieters should give themselves one day per week off, allowing themselves to eat whatever they want. This will prevent them from going off the diet and give them something to look forward to. They may find that they don't eat as much as they thought they might.
