A kickboard is an essential tool for anyone who is learning how to swim, coaching or otherwise learning how to strengthen her skills in the water. A kickboard floats the upper half of your body, leaving your body half unencumbered to work on your kicking technique and strengthening exercises. If you've never used a kickboard before, try one to perfect your kicks and learn to use your legs to control your direction and speed. You'll find that it's an ideal piece of equipment for the pool.

Step 1

Wade out into the water until it reaches your hips. You can wade out farther if you'd like, but if you're just learning how to swim with the aid of your kickboard, make sure to stay where you can easily touch the bottom and won't panic.

Step 2

Push the kickboard out in front of you until your arms are completely straightened. Rest your forearms on the board while gripping the top of the board with your hands. You can also try holding the bottom of the kickboard with your fingertips if you are a little more confident in swimming.

Step 3

Push the bottom half of your body up by jumping, and begin kicking your legs behind you. The kickboard should be supporting the upper half of your body while your legs propel your suspended midsection around the water.

Step 4

Practice directing yourself from side to side by varying your leg position and pointing the kickboard toward the direction you want to go. Then try alternating your speed from fast to slow as you test the power of your legs. Kick for 30 seconds, and then rest for 30 seconds.

Step 5

Use your kickboard to practice kicks. Try the flutter kick by straightening your legs, pointing your toes and making small, precise kicks. Practice freestyle kicking by making a big splash and rotating your hips as you kick. Utilize your kickboard each time you train to perfect your technique and strengthen your leg muscles.
